Food Establishments

The term food establishment means an operation that stores, prepares, packages, serves, vends, or otherwise provides food for human consumption, such as a restaurant, central preparation facility, catered feeding location, catering operations, vending operations, and/or vehicles used to transport food.

Temporary Events

A food service establishment that operates for a period of no more than 14 consecutive days in conjunction with a single event or celebration is the focus of this pamphlet. In other words, church suppers, fairs, farmer’s markets, or other similar celebrations would be considered temporary events if they are advertised as open to the general public. Bake sales offering only non-potentially hazardous foods are exempt from inspection, but require notification to the Health Department.

Food Safety Training

A food handler course is designed for food preparers, servers and other frontline staff. It may be completed by any individual that seeks knowledge of basic safe food handling procedures. This is an entry level training program and assessment for food service employees. It is not a food manager certification. The Joplin Health Department offers a food handler course. A food manager certification is designed for managers, chefs, owners and others with supervisory responsibilities in the food industry. A food manager certification verifies that a manager or person-in-charge has sufficient food safety knowledge to protect the public from foodborne illness. A food manager certification exam is accredited by American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-Conference for Food Protection (CFP) and is recognized in all 50 States. The Joplin Health Department does NOT offer a food manager certification, however the link below provides information on how to obtain this certification.
